What we clean, part by part
Every part comes out, and every part is mechanically cleaned, degreased and washed by hand. A brush and a burn-off only deal with what you can see. Most of the grease in a gas BBQ is caked onto the inside of the lid, the walls of the firebox, the underside of the grates and the heat plates under them, and that’s where flare-ups, uneven heat and rust begin.
-
Lid interior
The black flakes hanging from the inside of the lid aren’t paint. They’re layers of carbonized grease and smoke, and they end up on your food. We scrape the inside of the lid and mechanically clean it with specialized tools, then degrease it and wash it by hand.
-
Warming rack
Removed and mechanically cleaned with power tools, then degreased and washed by hand, so it goes back in food safe.
-
Cooking grates
The part that touches your food the most. The grates come out and are mechanically cleaned on both sides, taking off the baked-on carbon a brush and a burn-off never reach. They’re then degreased and washed by hand, and go back in food safe.
-
Heat plates
Some brands call them flavourizer bars. They shield the burners and take the worst of the drippings, so they cake up first and cause most flare-ups. Each one is removed, mechanically cleaned, degreased and washed by hand.
-
Burners
The burners are removed and cleaned with the same tools, then flushed through to clear out spider webs, insects and debris, degreased and washed by hand. A blocked burner is what causes uneven heat, lazy yellow flames and backfires, where gas ignites inside the burner instead of at the ports.
-
Firebox
With everything out, our team uses power tools and specialized cleaning agents to fully refurbish the inside of the firebox, then degrease it and wash it by hand, bringing it back to an almost new condition. Most cleanings stop at scraping out the loose debris. Ours doesn’t.
-
Grease tray and cup
Emptied, mechanically cleaned, degreased and washed by hand, so grease drains away from the fire the way it was designed to.
-
Exterior, shelves and cabinet
The whole outside is thoroughly washed by hand: lid, control panel, knobs, shelves, doors and cart. A polish is then applied to remove water marks and leave the BBQ glistening.
Built-in and island models
Built-in BBQs from Lynx, DCS, Wolf, Hestan, Kalamazoo and similar brands are cleaned in place, in the island. They’re larger, with more burners, rotisserie and sear zones and more stainless to refinish, which is why they’re priced as premium cleanings.
What to expect on the day
The same communication you get with every Barbeque Pro visit, and a process we’ve refined on thousands of gas BBQs.
-
A heads-up before we arrive, and no need to be home
You’ll get a message through our app when your technician is on the way. You don’t need to be home for the cleaning. As long as we can get to the BBQ, an outdoor water tap and an outdoor electrical outlet, we have everything we need, and you’ll get before and after photos of the whole job.
-
Inspect, test and photograph
We take a close look at your BBQ and make sure everything is working. If we spot a problem, the technician sends the details to our office so we can tell you about the repair or replacement part. While testing, we take detailed “before” photos.
-
Set up and take it apart
We prepare the work area to keep things tidy, then take the BBQ apart with care, setting aside every part to be cleaned. The inside of the firebox is scraped to clear the big debris before the real work starts.
-
Mechanically clean, degrease, wash by hand
This is the step that makes the difference. Every part is mechanically cleaned with power tools to strip off the baked-on carbon and grease, then degreased and washed by hand. The burners are flushed through, and the firebox is refurbished with power tools and specialized cleaning agents to an almost new condition.
-
Wash and polish the outside
Everything goes back in, and the outside is thoroughly washed by hand and polished to remove water marks. If you’re home, we’ll message you through the app when we’re almost done so you can come and see it.
-
Before and after photos
We take “after” photos and write up completion notes in the app. Your before and after photos and notes are sent to you, so you have a clear record of the whole job.
When to book a cleaning
Every cook leaves grease behind, and a burn-off only turns some of it to carbon. The rest collects on the flame tamers, in the firebox and in the grease tray, where it feeds flare-ups and eats at the metal.
We recommend a professional cleaning at least once a year, ideally in spring at the start of grilling season. If you grill often through the summer, a mid-season clean keeps your BBQ performing at its best and extends its life.
Signs yours is overdue
- Flare-ups that weren’t there when it was new
- Hot and cold spots, or yellow, lazy flames
- Black flakes dropping from the lid onto your food
- Smoke and a greasy smell every time it heats up
- A grease tray that’s full, or signs that animals have found it
- It takes longer than it used to to get up to temperature
BBQ cleaning questions
How much does BBQ cleaning cost?
Pricing is based on the size and brand of your BBQ. Standard brands are $254.99 for a regular BBQ with 3 to 4 burners, $329.99 for a large one and $384.99 for an XL with 5 to 6 burners. Premium brands such as Lynx, DCS and Wolf are $384.99 for 27" to 42" models and $439.99 for 48" to 60". Hestan and Kalamazoo are specialty cleanings at $549.99. These prices are for freestanding cart models; built-in BBQs are priced on the built-in BBQ cleaning page. Find your BBQ to see open dates at your nearest location.
What BBQ brands do you clean?
All major gas BBQ brands, including Alfresco, AOG, Blaze, Broil King, Bull, Char-Broil, Coyote, Crown Verity, DCS, Delta Heat, Ducane, Fire Magic, Hestan, Kalamazoo, Kenmore, Lynx, Napoleon, Nexgrill, Saber, TEC, Twin Eagles, Vermont Castings, Viking, Weber and Wolf. This page covers freestanding cart models; built-in and island BBQs have their own page. We also clean pellet grills and smokers and charcoal and ceramic BBQs, each with its own process.
How long does a professional BBQ cleaning take?
Most BBQ cleanings take between one and two hours, depending on the size and condition of the BBQ.
Do I need to be home during the cleaning?
No. As long as our technicians can reach the BBQ, water and electricity, you don’t need to be home. We notify you through our app when your technician is on the way and when they’re finishing up, and we send you before and after photos and completion notes.
How often should I have my BBQ professionally cleaned?
At least once a year, ideally at the start of grilling season in spring. If you grill frequently through the summer, a mid-season clean is worth considering to keep your BBQ performing at its best and extend its lifespan.
Is the black stuff flaking off the inside of my lid paint?
No. It’s layers of carbonized grease and smoke that have built up and started to peel. It isn’t harmful, but you don’t want it on your food, and it comes off as part of the cleaning.
What if you find something that needs repair?
We test your BBQ before we start. If a burner, igniter, valve or other part isn’t doing its job, the technician sends the details to our office and we’ll follow up about the repair or replacement part. Barbeque Pro handles BBQ repairs and parts as well as cleaning.
Can you pick up my BBQ and clean it at your shop?
In Toronto, yes, for standard cart models only. Premium and built-in models are always cleaned on site. Everywhere else, we come to you.
Do you clean BBQs in Mississauga, Ottawa and across the GTA?
Yes. Barbeque Pro has 11 Ontario locations: Toronto, Vaughan, Mississauga, Pickering, Newmarket, Caledon, Hamilton, Barrie, Collingwood, Muskoka and Ottawa. Pick your BBQ, choose your location and you’ll see the open dates.
Not a freestanding gas BBQ?
Built-in outdoor kitchens, pellet grills and ceramic BBQs each get their own process and their own pricing.
